There are Twenty-Five Georgian Jewish cemeteries outside of London dating from the early to mid 18th century. It has the distinction of being entirely enclosed by a substantial high wall dating from and at its entrance there is a complete Bet Tohorah, or “Cleansing House”, a very rare feature to survive from this period. The burial ground was established around the s on a plot of unenclosed land in the Leskinnick area of the town in what was then an open wooded valley.
The land on which this original burial plot stood was owned by Canon Rogers of Sithney, who also owned land in Lescudjack and Ludgvan, and who clearly wanted to encourage the Jews to settle in the town.

Basket Boundaries in Local History Some years ago, I went up to the roof of a 26 storey building in Portsmouth to look at the view. Portsea Island, as you may know is quite flat and the dense blocks of Victorian streets stretched away to the east in my view in various patterns, mostly squarish. However, there was one area where the streets were not straight for different distances, but were formed in a series of large S bends.
I cycled over to have a look at them but could see no physical cause. Old maps however showed the pre-housing pattern of fields and hamlets, whose fields when sold off to developers formed the boundaries of the next extensions of housing away from the old harbour and town centre. I discovered that large, very square field shapes, whether in the open countryside or fossilised in town streets, were relatively recent, dating from centuries when land was enclosed by Parliamentary acts.
Bronze Age fields show up as small, slightly irregular shapes, although some are actually preserved as modern boundaries, which Jean Nankervis has shown in her history of Wicca, near St Ives. In many parts of Britain there is a further pattern of strip fields. These were often made when times were unsettled and it was safer for farmers to live close together in a hamlet or village, going out to work every day in the surrounding area.
Who owned what land could be indicated by impermanent markers such as a tall stick in each corner, and these eventually changed into walls, fences and hedges. Try the car park at Torrington in North Devon; this has a splendid view across a river valley, where areas of hedged strip fields are still there, the reason being that they are owned by an ancient local charity who cannot sell them.

The newspaper was yellowing, and it looked to have been packed a number of years ago, and left mouldering in a loft through lack of usefulness, or perhaps for safekeeping. As I began to unwrap, the first thing that struck me was how very tiny its contents were: My particular favourite were a pair of Worcester porcelain extinguishers or candle snuffers if you want to use the charmingly old fashioned terminology. They were stamped with both the Worcester and the diamond registry mark, allowing us to accurately date not just the year, month, and day of their design, but even the package number.
The next treasure was an unassuming glass casket. Less than 10cm long, it was made of translucent, ochre-coloured glass and decorated with red, white and black enamelled fleurs-de-lis. Most famous for his floral glass vases of the early 20th century etched with bold, naturalistic designs, our little chest was an example of his early work. The real jewels in our rather petite crown were four stoneware figures, tightly packed and tucked away at the very bottom of the box.

The Social Group is the favourite social organisation for singles. The Social Group was set up in the first place because of our own experience of being single and finding it really difficult to meet people and make new friends. Before there was The Social Group, we tried everything, and to be honest, were pretty appalled at the choice… We found the usual sad singles clubs had bizarre rules where women had to agree to dance with any man of any age who asked them, and then had to allow themselves be hit on in a really creepy way.
We found other local clubs who almost forced people to hold events in their own homes, paying to cater for the horde of complete strangers who descended upon them.

Jump to navigation Jump to search Hayle Cornish: Understand[ edit ] Hayle Estuary The modern town of Hayle dates from the 18th century but there has been activity on this site since the Bronze Age when traders used the port for its safe anchorage. Hayle is famous for its association with the Cornish industry of mining and was once an important port for the exporting of copper ore in the 19th century.
Equally famous for engineering, the Harvey family had a foundry in Hayle dating from the s – hence the formation of the two distinct sides of town: Copperhouse and Foundry, of which Hayle can still be loosely divided into today. At the end of the 19th century Hayle’s smelting industries went into a slow but steady decline, which would continue well into the s.
During this time, the potential of Hayle as a tourist destination did not go unnoticed.
